If Epic Games' complaint about Apple's App Store allowing third-party payment systems is allowed, Tim Cook compares it to a "flea market."

Apple's court fight with Epic Games is far from over, and Tim Cook addressed some of the issues in a new interview. One of them was not accepting third-party payment mechanisms for developers on the App Store, claiming that allowing them would turn it into a flea market.

Cook believes Apple will prevail in its legal battle with Epic Games.

The Toronto Star held an interview with Tim Cook ahead of the start of the US trial on May 3. According to Apple's Software Store rules, developers must use the company's in-app buying method. In a nutshell, direct payments are not permitted in any way. Epic Games insists that all App Store developers should have access to third-party payment methods, but Tim Cook disagrees, as he described in the following interview.

“At the heart of Epic's argument is that they want developers to enter their own payment details. However, it will transform the App Store into a flea market, and you know how confident you are at a flea market. The number of people entering such a market would be significantly reduced, which would be worse for the consumer because they would lose out on the creativity that we just learned about from the four entrepreneurs. And the creators would be left out because they wouldn't be able to market to such a large audience. As a result, nobody wins in that situation.”
Cook claims in the interview that by limiting the payment system, the App Store can provide a secure and trusted environment for consumers to find applications. However, Cook's assurances about the App Store's protection haven't stopped major financial frauds. A Bitcoin fraud occurred recently, leaving one user without $600,000, or 17.1 Bitcoin, which was his life savings.

Regardless, Cook is confident that Apple will win its case against Epic Games, and that Apple will continue to review applications rigorously.
